Chinese Community
Protests Successfully
emf. Claims that
it had been proven the foot-and-mouth disease came from slops from a Chinese
restaurant caused a storm of protest among the Chinese community. Representatives
of approximately 12,000 Chinese take-aways and 3,000 Chinese restaurants
in the UK demanded that the claims be immediately retracted. Members of the
Chinese community marched on MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries)
to protest that they had been made scapegoats. Many restaurants in the Chinatown
area of London closed in solidarity with the protest.
Demonstrators chanted ‘Mr Blair - Be Fair’ and ‘Justice for the
Chinese’ and waved placards saying ‘Stop the Foot and MAFF outbreak – hogwash’.
In no time, the demonstrators had organised themselves after
false reports had appeared in the media - with success as one can see.
