Appeal to Humanity to Stop Chechen Genocide

zf. Under the cloak of fighting terrorism Russian special task forces are now increasing their hunt for alleged terrorists in Chechnya. It has been forgotten that they are not terrorists at all but human beings demanding their right of self-determination. The two most highly armed states in the world have now made a deal: Each of them is now pursuing its interests in the Caucasian region. The Russians want to subjugate Chechnya once and for all while the Americans want to kill alleged al-Qaeda fighters in the breakaway republic of Abchasia, former ally of Georgia. Under the horrible terror of this new alliance civilians are being killed, people abducted, women raped and human dignity trampled on incessantly. Dumbed down by the propaganda slogan 'fight against terrorism', the whole world is made to look on while these crimes are being committed.

The civil rights movement 'Memorial' deserves recognition for its efforts not to let these viola-tions of human rights fall into oblivion. At the risk of their own lives the team of 'Memorial' have documented the testimonies of that real terror. The documentation constitues a serious accusation against the governments in Moscow, Washington and all those who turn a blind eye or remain silent to what is happening.

This appeal was signed by more than 60,000 people, which amounts to 10% of the current population of Chechnya.

Sheets with 20,000 signatures were delivered to Mr. Adam Sweed, the representative of the OSCE in Europe, on June 6, 2001 at a press-conference in Moscow, organized by the Sakharov Founda-tion for journalists, leaders of Human Rights Organizations and Humanitarian Missions of Russia and Western countries.

On November 28, 2001, at the hearings of the European Council in Strasbourg of Europe, sheets with 40,000 more signatures were presented by Ruslan Badalov, the President of the Chechen National Olympic Committee, and the head of the Chechen National Salvation Committee, organized by refugees. Ruslan Badalov handed the signatures to the General Secretary of the Par-liament of the Council of Europe in the presence of co-chairs of the working group of 'State Duma-PACE', Lord Dzhadd and D. Rogozin. There was no response to this appeal. Nobody wanted to hear the Chechens alive. Maybe someone will hear the dead ones ...

An appeal of a systematically exterminated people of the Chechen Republic to the intellectuals, politicians, and wide public of the European countries:

Save Our Souls!

Chechens are being killed. Every day and every hour.
For the fourth year in a row.
They kill systematically, deliberately. They are not ashamed of anyone ...
They are not stopped by anything ...
They kill women. They kill children.
But particularly men.
They kill whole families and individuals. They cut their noses, ears, and heads.
They take off their scalps, they castrate them.
They kill in the 'cleansings' of villages and in their secret prisons.
At the checkpoints and in the refugee camps.
They kill with machine guns, they use aviation.
They use tactic rockets and drugs.
They kill with their lies.
The Chechens will disappear from the ethnic map of the world in several years!

Save us!

We have nobody to ask help from, no one wants to hear of us. Politicians are fighting for power, businessmen for juicy deals. The Chechen oil-its major treasure-turned out to be its major trouble.
While Chechens are being killed, trains of oil are taken out of Chechnya.
We get blood and fresh tombs, Putin and his entourage-money and power.

Europe-don't be silent!

Silence means support.
We do not believe you are together with the always drunk Russian general-maniacs.
Can the fate of the Chechen people be less important to you than the animal rights!
We are waiting for help!
Not with guns-this is not needed.
Neither do we need humanitarian aid: what is it for if the people who eat it are anyway killed?
And although Russia understands only power-we do not ask to declare a war.
Help us with your word!
Prove that human life and the rights of human beings, still matter something to you.
And if you value your honor, do not let your leaders shake hands, which are washed in the Chechen blood.

Zainap Gahaeva (Echo of War, Regional Peacemaking Organization)
Libkhan Bazaeva (The Union of Chechen Women)

We hereby list the names of those who were killed by the Russian military and secret services in the course of the last 1,5 years in several dozens of the 427 towns and villages of Chechnya. This was the period when no active military operation was undertaken in Chechnya.

These murdered people were no terrorists or guerilla fighters, at least no one accused them of being such.

Not a single one of them died opposing the Russian soldiers.

The only guilt that they had was their belong-ing to the Chechen people. In the present-day Russia, this is considered a crime ...

Information about the murder of these people is given in the 'Chronicle of violence' of the Russian Human Rights Center 'Memorial' at: www.memo.ru
